UNLOCKING YOUR CALLING – Part 1

Calling – the destiny of every person. The word that everyone needs to be completely aware of. But seldom do we even care about the calling that God has kept over our lives. We are always chasing after the wind. We are so gullible that the devil keeps us focused on anything but the call of God on our lives with his cunningness that he does one of two things:

  1. Suffocate us with worries of this world

  2. Let us drown in the blessings

Yeah, you read that right, he doesn’t care if we are blessed as long as we don’t live in the call of God.

An anecdote comes to mind, I remember my mom telling me that amidst the hardest times of her life, the prophetical words spoken over her were firstly concerned with the greater plan of God(call) over her life. Prophetic words of the future and where our family was to fulfil the call of God were spoken in the middle of the chaos. That what God spoke was the last thing she wanted to hear, in fact, she told me that she would laugh at hearing the words spoken over her. In her mind, she couldn’t even figure out how to get through another day, but God was speaking about things to happen 7-10 years from then.

What does this tell us? God is always concerned about the call over our lives. In fact, having sight of the call over our lives gives us the strength and hope to get through another day. Paul was so clear in his call to be an apostle that whenever we see him beginning any of his letters to the churches, we can see him beginning by saying just that.

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes 1 Corinthians 1:1

So how did these men of God in the bible get to unlock their calling and get to see it so clear that nothing could hinder the vision they had of it? The answer lies in the fact that we are all called by the will of God.

Before getting to the nitty gritty of unlocking the calling, let me break a myth. God wants you to know what you are called to be. Don’t ever think that you can’t know what God has called you to be. The enemy doesn’t want you to know your calling because if you don’t walk in your calling then you get a straight ticket to hell. I know that’s very raw, but that’s the truth. Jesus, Himself tells this in Matthew 7:21-23.

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers! Matthew 7:21-23

The emphasis is in the boldface words. Jesus clearly says that if we think we know about Jesus and go to church and call on Him (pray to Him) we will not enter heaven. It’s more than that. We will get to heaven only if we do the will of God. Jesus also goes on to say that He will say ‘I never knew you’ This means that we mustn’t try to find the call over our lives with our feelings and desires but know the will of God by knowing and walking closely with Jesus.

God will reveal His will for our lives because He doesn’t see us as servants but as friends according to John 15:15

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15

So how do we unlock this will of God(Calling)? The Bible clearly gives us the answer in Romans 12: 2.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12: 2

Let’s split this verse into three segments:

  1. Do not conform to the pattern of this world

  2. be transformed by the renewing of your mind

  3. you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is

The third part is our desired goal. We want to know what the will of God is, in this case, the call of God over our lives. The Bible tells us that we need to do the first 2 things to achieve this goal.

Firstly, we mustn’t conform to the pattern of this world. The pattern of this world is worrying about one thing or the other at all times. As I said earlier, the devil always gives us something to worry about, so we never bother about the call of God. How do we get out of this pattern? We focus on the kingdom of God; because neither is worrying about the call of God the answer. This is because the kingdom of God is an upside-down kingdom. A kingdom we cannot understand in our natural mind.

Jesus says in Matthew 6:33-34,

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33-34

We need to seek the kingdom of God before anything else, so we do not conform to the pattern of this world. Seeking the kingdom of God means we seek the face of God before we do anything else. It means we are indulging with God more than we indulge with the world and its ways. Seeking the kingdom of God is to know God intimately. When we do that, God will automatically reveal what He has called us for. If we do not go by Matthew 6:33, we might think that God is calling us for one thing but it might not really be the call of God. We will only know the truth in intimacy with Christ. We don’t have to strive for intimacy either, as He has given us the Holy Spirit to commune with God at all times.

As we do this, the enemy will try to fill our lives with worries about this world, but we need to look to God anyway. Making that illogical decision to walk according to the word of God is the first key to unlocking your calling. God is looking for people who will trust Him and His word as the absolute truth to align their lives according to it. He is looking for people who are willing to take radical steps of faith for the sake of the kingdom of God.
